Metabolomics is increasingly recognized as a critical tool for unlocking microbiota function because metabolites serve as the "currency" and "language" that mediate the relationship between microbe and host. But, in order to effectively decipher this relationship, the metabolomics technology employed needs to possess certain important characteristics.
